Entry #9: Inconvenience
Hello, reader.
Today, I will be writing about the above comic strip. I wanted to share and discuss this specific comic because it defines how people interact and view social media. To clarify, there are many foolish and superficial pieces of information out there on the internet. Included in this, are harmful or awful opinions / takes people have. Yes, there are wrong opinions, and these include the endangerment of others or people's safety. We may have free speech, but that is no excuse to freely abuse it! Like the above comic, people can have informed and educated statements based on facts. Upon seeing this, people will usually agree. The thing is, a certain demographic will decide to "unionize" people based on misinformation.
What might this mean? It means that despite the accuracy of a statement or claim, there will be those who agree with the group that wants to turn everything on its head. No matter how misinformed an ideology may be, as long people believe they have an imaginary thing to fight against, they will join in on it. The food industry is a huge example of this. There has always been a lot of discussion surrounding food production; such as, what is being produced and where food is being produced. Even if there was a study to be released tomorrow revealing to everybody that processed meat is poisonous or causes a certain illness (cancer, in this case), people will look to the opinion that is most convenient to them.
It should go without saying, that I am not invalidating or disagreeing with the fact that everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, there is a line where an opinion stops being an opinion, and is downright foolishness. People cannot complain about misinformation when a large amount of them consistently and continuously contribute to spreading misinformation. Everyone should look to opposing view points, it is a healthy mindset to frame and develop. There are valid points to all sides; until there is not. Most of this stems from convenience. Whichever or whatever path is the most convenient for someone to take, they will most likely do it. Food production is the result of this, as no one cares enough about where their food is coming from, or what is in it. As long as they can continue buying affordable, easy-to-get food, there is no issue. Disrupting a person's lifestyle or the threat of change is another factor, as people do not want inconvenience in their routine. Said change could be an easy feat to accomplish, but work is work. And people do not want to do the hard thing, they want to do the easy thing.
Love it! great cartoon chose about the food industry. I think the intent was funny, but to give awareness to people in reference to meat.
